I'm excited to share that I'll be leading a workshop at Artica Svalbard in Longyearbyen on Thursday 13 August, from 18:00 to 20:00.
Soil as Image is a two-hour introduction to experimental soil chromatography — a process that draws pigments and compounds out of soil and lets them separate across paper, resolving into circular patterns of colour and form. Working with local Svalbard soil samples, participants will make their own chromatograms and see how differences in composition become visible on the page.
Alongside the practical process, we'll spend time thinking about soil as a living material, an environmental archive and a witness to ecological change. The session connects to my wider research into more sustainable, climate-conscious approaches to photography, and to the new body of work I'm developing during my residency at Artica in response to Svalbard's changing Arctic environment.
It's a hands-on, experimental session with the emphasis on process and discovery. No previous experience is needed.
